Proteins are one of the major nutrients obtained from food. They are needed for growth, repair and maintenance of the body tissues. The body is made up of different proteins each with its characteristic structure and function. Chemically, protein consists of strings of amino acids joined together. Most of the 20 amino acids can be manufactured by the body but there are eight essential amino acids which must be obtained in food proteins because they cannot be produced by the body.
